How can my business accept bitcoin?

Quick answer

Use a payment app or service that shows a QR code at checkout. Some work with the register you already have; others send payments straight to your own wallet. Most let you keep the bitcoin or turn it into dollars right away.

Options include BTCPay Server (free, open-source software you run yourself; payments go to your own wallet), Square (built into Square's point of sale for US sellers), Strike (point of sale, invoices and online checkout; settle in dollars or bitcoin), and Zaprite (invoices and checkout that pay into the wallet you choose, for a monthly fee). They're listed alphabetically, not ranked. Most take Lightning for fast, cheap in-person payments, and some also take regular on-chain payments for larger amounts. Compare fees, whether the service holds your bitcoin or sends it straight to you, whether it works with your register, and how refunds work, since bitcoin payments can't be reversed.
