Why can a restored wallet show zero even with the correct seed words?

Quick answer

Your seed words are right, but the wallet may be looking at different addresses. A different passphrase (even a typo), address type, or derivation path opens a different set of addresses. The wallet may also still be syncing.

Go deeper

A passphrase (sometimes called the 25th word) creates a completely separate wallet. Every passphrase works, so a typo shows an empty wallet instead of an error. Wallets also use a different derivation path for each address type (addresses starting with 1, 3, bc1q, or bc1p), so try the other address types in the restore settings. Most wallets stop scanning after 20 unused addresses in a row (the gap limit); if you used lots of addresses, raise it in settings. Multisig and Lightning wallets need more than the seed words to recover. Never type your seed words into a website or give them to anyone offering help.

Your seed words make a master key. Each address type follows its own path to a list of addresses.
