How It Works

What is the blockchain?

Quick answer

It's Bitcoin's public record of every transaction. New payments are grouped into a "block" about every 10 minutes, and each block links to the one before it.

Go deeper

Each block contains a fingerprint (hash) of the previous block. Changing an old transaction would break every block after it, so the history is practically impossible to rewrite.
